Michigan Lawmakers Introduce Bills Package To Expand Access To Health Care To State's Uninsured
Michigan lawmakers introduced health reform packages this week, the Detroit News reports. On Thursday, state senators introduced a bipartisan package of health care bills aimed at expanding health insurance coverage to the state"s 1.2 million uninsured residents. The package, named MI Health, would establish two state health plans that provide the residents with more affordable and accessible coverage options.MI Access would expand the state Medicaid program to include residents with annual incomes under 200% of the federal poverty level, and beneficiaries would contribute copayments for services and medications. MI Coverage would provide subsidized coverage options for residents with annual incomes at 200% to 300% of the poverty level. Fees for residents under MI Coverage would be set according to their health levels and habits (Bouffard, Detroit News, 5/14). The proposed legislation package also would create a state fund that pays for insurance claims exceeding $25,000, or up to $250,000 per year, with health plans making contributions to the fund. In addition, the package proposes to bar commercial insurers from rejecting coverage for applicants with chronic conditions or increasing their premiums if they have been previously diagnosed with a chronic condition (Anstett, Detroit Free Press, 5/15).

Protesters Disrupt Democrats' Best-Laid Plans For Health Reform 'Conversations'
Over the weekend, a series of protests at Democratic events meant to promote health reform "organized by loose-knit coalition of conservative voters and advocacy groups, were a raucous start to what is expected to be weeks of political and ideological clashes over the health care overhaul," the New York Times reports. "Republicans said that the protests were just the beginning of spontaneous opposition to the health care proposals and that they would only gain momentum as Americans learn more about the legislation." But Democrats said they were only an effort to block discourse, and were anything but a grass-roots campaign. "This is a very coordinated effort," said one Democratic Congressman who was confronted by protestors at a grocery store (Herszenhorn and Stolberg, 8/3).

Cook Medical Announces FDA Clearance For Advance(R) 35LP PTA Balloon Dilatation Catheter

Cook Medical has received clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to market its newest balloon dilatation catheter, the Advance® 35LP. The device is intended for use in patients with lesions in the femoral, iliac and renal arteries and rounds out Cook"s complete line of low-profile PTA balloons. The Advance 35LP will play an integral part in Cook"s Leg Therapy Program, an initiative geared toward helping physicians address the anatomical challenges of treating Peripheral Vascular Disease (PVD) and deliver clinically effective interventional solutions to the patients who need them most. Commonly associated with diabetes, hypertension and coronary disease, PVD can result in amputation or death if left untreated. Few are aware of the minimally invasive treatment options available apart from amputation or surgical bypass, the latter of which is the current gold standard in treating this disease. The Advance line comprises three low-profile balloons (14LP, 18LP, 35LP) that range in size and composition to treat lesions in the peripheral arteries as well as obstructive lesions of native or synthetic arteriovenous dialysis fistulas. The Advance 35LP balloon, compatible with a .035-inch wire guide, is designed to address common above-the-knee blockages. The Advance 18LP, compatible with a .018-inch wire guide, is geared toward the femoral artery and popliteal region of the leg. The Advance 14LP, compatible with a .014-inch wire guide, is reserved for treatment of the most tortuous anatomies of the lower leg, including the popliteal and infrapopliteal arteries.
