California HIV Services Center Forced To Close
Declining private and public financial support has forced Vital Life Services, an Oakland, Calif.-based nonprofit that provided support, case management, mental health counseling and other services to roughly 400 low-income and homeless clients with HIV, to shut down, the Oakland Tribune reports. According to the Tribune, the 25-year-old center -- which also provided "unique" services such as daily meals and emergency housing assistance -- "has become a victim of the recession" (Burt, Oakland Tribune, 5/30).

Boston Medical Center (BMC) researchers have identified potential safety risks among methadone maintenance treatment (MMT) patients due to the quantity and accuracy of medical record documentation. Improved communication and coordination among substance use treatment and medical providers could mitigate and manage the potential adverse effects of methadone and interacting medications. The BMC study appears in the July issue of Journal of General Internal Medicine.

Newly Released Nixon Tapes Reveal Reaction To Roe V. Wade
President Richard Nixon, who was in office when the Supreme Court issued its 1973 decision in Roe v. Wade, in secret recordings from January and February of that year discussed his views on abortion with an aide, the New York Times reports. The comments were among more than 150 hours of tape and 30,000 pages of documents made public Tuesday by the National Archives" Nixon Presidential Library. The tapes were recorded by secret microphones in the White House"s Oval Office. Nixon in the tapes expressed ambivalence over the decision, as well as concern that increased access to abortion leads to "permissiveness" and that "it breaks the family." Nixon also said that he believed there was a need for abortion in some cases, including interracial pregnancies and rape. He said, "There are times when an abortion is necessary. I know that." He added, "When you have a black and a white. Or a rape" (Savage, New York Times, 6/24).Broadcast CoverageNPR"s "All Things Considered" on Tuesday reported on Nixon"s abortion comments and political reaction to Roe at the time of the decision (Totenberg, "All Things Considered," NPR, 6/23).

Obstructive Sleep Apnea Prevalent In Nonobese Patients

There is a high probability of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in non-obese, middle-aged patients, according to a research abstract presented at SLEEP 2009, the 23rd Annual Meeting of the Associated Professional Sleep Societies. Results confirmed that OSA in non-obese patients is most prevalent in middle-aged men with larger neck sizes. Fifty-four percent (2,906) of 5,426 non-obese patients were OSA positive, and most of them were middle age (57 percent). An equal number of patients had mild OSA (50.4%) or moderate to severe OSA (49.6%). Male prevalence and neck size were significantly higher in the group with moderate to severe OSA. According to lead author Teimur Yeligulashvili, PhD, clinical supervisor at SleepTech in Wayne, N.J., the researchers were surprised by the fact that no significant differences were found in Epworth Sleepiness Scale results and neck size between OSA positive and OSA negative in non-obese patients. "More than 50 percent of non-obese OSA patients had mild OSA, suggesting that in-lab polysmonography may be more accurate in assessing people in this demographic, as opposed to portable monitoring systems," said Yeligulashvili. The study included data from 5,426 non obese patients and 23,157 overweight patients. Data were collected from a total of 28,583 polysomnograms from patients 18 years or older between 2004 and 2008 from 18 sleep centers in the SleepTech network. Patients with body mass index (BMI) between 18.5 and 27 were considered as non-obese and patients with apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) of greater than five were defined as OSA positive. Associations have been found between OSA and serious medical conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, obesity, hypertension and increased risk for mortality.
