Needle Exchange Program In Humboldt County, Calif., Forced To End; Officials Hoping For Federal Help
Health officials in Humboldt County, Calif., "will be watching closely" the debate expected to ensue over legislation introduced last week containing "a provision that would scrap the federal funding ban on needle exchange programs that has been in place for years," the Eureka Times-Standard reports. According to the Times-Standard, "This month, Open Door Community Health Centers" clinics in Arcata and Eureka quietly stopped administering the needle exchange program they have operated for almost a decade." Open Door Community Health Centers Chief Operating Officer Cheyenne Spetzler, said, "The footprint of the program just kept getting bigger." In addition, grant funding was often limited to covering the costs of the needles and not the costs of administering the programs, Spetzler said. County Department of Health and Human Services Programs Director Barbara LaHaie said the county is currently seeking alternatives to continue the program. However, "Without a reliable funding stream, that may prove difficult," the article states (Greenson, 7/13).

Xeloda(R)-Oxaliplatin Combination (XELOX) Shown To Be More Effective Than Standard Chemotherapy Regimen In Adjuvant Colon Cancer
Genentech, Inc. announced that an international Phase III study demonstrated that oral Xeloda® plus oxaliplatin (XELOX) is superior to a commonly used intravenous chemotherapy, 5-FU/LV (infused 5-fluorouracil plus leucovorin), in increasing the time people with adjuvant colon cancer lived without their cancer returning when given immediately after surgery. The data show those who participated in the study and took XELOX immediately after surgery lived longer without their cancer being detectable than those who took intravenous 5U/LV. No new adverse events related to Xeloda were observed in the study.

ACOG Issues Revision Of Labor Induction Guidelines
Revised guidelines on when and how to induce labor in pregnant women were issued by The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG). The guidelines provide physicians with guidance regarding which induction methods may be most appropriate under particular circumstances, as well as the safety requirements, and risks and benefits of the different methods. ACOG"s Practice Bulletin "Induction of Labor" is published in the August 2009 issue of Obstetrics & Gynecology.

Rapid Methods To Detect Microorganisms In Food: K-State To Host Workshop

Kansas State University once again is host to a noted microbiology workshop that helps the scientists who test food and other samples for microorganisms. K-State"s 29th annual Rapid Methods and Automation in Microbiology workshop will be June 19-26. The workshop, now in its 29th year, has served more than 4,000 participants from across the United States and 60 countries. Rapid methods and automation are a dynamic area in applied microbiology dealing with the study of improved methods in the isolation, early detection, characterization and enumeration of microorganisms and their products in clinical, food, industrial and environmental samples. The K-State workshop will focus on the practical application of conventional and new commercial systems of rapid identification of microorganisms from medical specimens, foods, water and the environment. Workshop participants will receive intensive theoretical and hands-on training in microbiological automation. Lectures and classes will be at the Clarion Hotel in Manhattan and at Call Hall and the College of Veterinary Medicine complex on the K-State campus. The award-winning workshop is under the direction of K-State"s Daniel Y.C. Fung, an internationally known authority in the field and professor of animal sciences and industry and food science.
